- To search for specific information, Select News/Search Scrolling News from the Main Menu Bar
- Scrolling news can be searched by all sources (*) or by individual news sources. Make your selection from the list at the top of the dialog box
Keywords:
Keyword searches allow you to find all news stories that have that word in the title, the story body, or both.
- Type the keyword in the Keywords entry area
- If you are doing multiple keywords select the AND/OR condition
- AND – the title or story must contain all of the keywords
- OR – the title or story must contain at least one of the keywords
- For searching multiple words:
- Single quotes are used to indicate the words in the search must be within 50 words of each other and they can be in any order
- Double quotes are used to indicate the words in the search must be within 2 words of each other in the order specified.
- Parentheses are used to group queries together. They will find stories that contain all the words, ignoring order and nearness.
- There is currently no way to specify an exact phrase
- You can also use wildcards:
- ? used within a word indicating the use of any character in that position
EX: 20?? gas survey – will look for any characters after 20 but before gas – this could render 2001, 2002, 2003, etc.
- ? used within a word indicating the use of any character in that position
- * used at the end of a word to indicate retrieving any additional characters
EX: soy* will look for any characters beyond soy – this could retrieve soybeans, soymeal, etc.
- Next, select Match Case if the search criteria must be searched as shown in the keyword
Then select Titles only, Stories, only or check both
In this example we’re doing a scrolling news search for all stories that have corn and beans in the title only,
Notice the result of the search:
It generated End of List which indicates that there are only 6 stories that contain both corn and beans in the title. Perhaps we should have done a search selecting and OR condition by clicking on the “Match any word (OR)” selection.
Using Wild cards in News Searches
Entering soy as a keyword will return only headlines with the word “soy” in them. Use the following wildcards to expand the search.
Use a question mark to indicate any one character.
Examples:
soy??? will return soyoil, but not soy or soybean
soy???? will return soybean, but not soy or soyoil
Use an asterisk to indicate any number of characters, including none.
Example: soy* will return soy, soyoil, and soybean
