Ticker Symbols are what drive the data that is displayed in a quote sheet.

When you open a quote window, the first cell in the Ticker Symbol column is selected and ready for input.  You can enter a standard symbol or any of the alternative entries described below.

To enter additional symbols, select a cell in the Ticker Symbol column, and follow the instructions below.  If you select a cell that already contains a symbol, the data for the new symbol will replace the previous data.

To Add a Symbol

To enter a single symbol, type the symbol in the Ticker Symbol column and press Enter.  Repeat for additional symbols.

Examples:

  • QNGX15 for the electronic NYMEX Natural Gas November 2015
  • EBH15 for Brent Crude March 2015
  • INDU.X for the Dow Jones Industrial Average

Tip: When entering the ticker symbol using the month and year codes as shown above, the contract will not roll upon expiration. When the contract expires it will display invalid. If you want the contract to roll upon expiration, use one of the following options for entering ticker symbols:

To Add an Automatically Updating Symbol using an Alias character

For a symbol that will automatically update as the contract expires, type the root symbol of the contract followed by @1 and press Enter.

For example: enter @C@1 for the current electronic corn contract.

For an automatically updating symbol for the next month out, use the root symbol followed by @2.

Use @3 for the next following month, and so on.

ProphetX will update your symbols automatically as contracts expire.

To Add an Entire Futures Chain (with Automatic Updates)

Type the root symbol (for example, QNG), and press the F3 key.

To Enter a Specific Number of Contracts

Type the root symbol, press the space bar, then the number of contracts to display (for example, QNG  3) and press the F3 key.

Chains entered with the F3 key will automatically update as contracts roll to the next contract month.

To Add Filtered Entries: Symbols and Chains

To customize your quote request for exchanges and sources, right-click in the quote window and select Advanced Request.

The Advanced Request dialog can also be used to add a future chain, a future options chain, or an options chain.

To Manually Add a Traded Spread

Type the symbol with the contract alias.  Ex:  @ES@1@ES@2   this will cause the contracts to update upon expiration so you don’t have to re-enter it.

To Add an Exchange-Traded Spread

Type the symbol root.

Hold down the Ctrl, Shift and F3 keys

To Add a Quote List

Open the Files docked pane and locate the desired quote list (those provided with your ProphetX program are located in the Quote Lists folder under My ProphetX Files).

Place your pointer on the quote list name or icon and drag it to the quote window.

To Add a Free-Form Function

A free-form function combines one or more instrument symbols, mathematical operators, and numbers.

You can include plus (+), minus (-), multiplied by (*), and divided by (/ )

Enter the function and press enter.

Examples:

  • QNGZ6-QNGX6
  • QWZ6*2

To Add Most Actively Trading Futures Contract

The most actively trading futures contract is based on yesterday’s Volume.

For a row that will always provide data for the most actively trading futures contract month, type the root symbol of the contract followed by @A, then press the enter key.

Yesterday’s most active future will display in the Quote Sheet.

For example, enter QNG@A for the most actively trading natural gas contract.

To Avoid Symbol Collision

To avoid symbol collision on symbols that may have the same root – upper and lower case, for example – enter the following syntax: 3 CHAR. VENDOR; 3 CHAR. MARKET CODE; SYMBOL Ex: DTN:CBT:CZ12   This should be used only in the event you experience the symbol collision issue – it does not roll at expiration.

Symbol Search

Symbols can also be added to the quote sheet via the SYMBOL SEARCH mechanism.  With Symbol Search, you can look up any instrument and then drag and drop 1 or all of the related symbols into various ProphetX displays, including the Quote Sheet. (Hint:  symbols in the quote sheet will NOT roll when expired if you use this method for Adding symbols to at Quote Sheet)

Other Ways to Add Quotes to a Quote Sheet

  • You can copy and paste most symbols from another quote sheet or a Windows application, such as an Excel spreadsheet. (Hint: contracts  will only roll if originally entered as rolling symbols in a quote sheet – they will not roll if copied from a spreadsheet unless those symbols are also rolling symbols()
  • You can copy data from the quote sheet to almost all other ProphetX displays.  Just tile the windows, then drag and drop from one to the other. (Make sure you drop the quotes in the Ticker Symbol column)
  • To quickly enter all the traded spreads for a symbol, type the symbol root and hold down the Ctr and Shift keys while pressing F3.
  • Quotes can also be created from other displays by right clicking in the display and selecting New/Quote Sheet.

Tick Trend Indicators

You can also add a  column to a quote sheet that will show trends for the last ten ticks.

  • Green = Up
  • Red = Down
  • . = The price is the same as the last tick
