THE EIA’s Short Term Energy Outlook (STEO) publication provides near-term energy data, analysis, and forecasts. Each month, the STEO provides forecasts from the time of publication through December of the next calendar year. The STEO forecasts consumption, production, trade, and prices across major fuel types and also provides in-depth analysis for crude oil, petroleum products, and natural gas markets. Although its focus is on U.S. energy markets, the STEO also forecasts certain international liquid fuels.
Economic models are the foundation for the STEO forecast. In the STEO report, analyst judgment is incorporated to account for recent market developments. These events could include regulatory changes, extreme weather, supply and demand disruptions, and pipeline or fuel distribution constraints.
All symbols start with the “STEO_” prefix and can be found in your Symbol Search in the Energy – EIA node. Sub-nodes denote the different tables from the report.
There are two types of symbols in ProphetX from this data: Continuous and Forwards.
- Continuous
- These have all the data associated with a single EIA token from column 1 (A) in the spreadsheet. We use the token that EIA has in the first column of each row as the second token for these symbols. For example, in this screen shot, row 8 has token COPRPUS in column A. The symbol STEO_COPRPUS would contain all the data from row 8 (and from all prior reports for that row).
- The data for each column will be put on the report release date for the year/month of the column, projecting out into future dates (December 2024 as of this announcement). Because of this, even “historical data” for these symbols can change upon new releases.
- g., the 12.42 value from column BC would be put on 5/9/2023 and would over-write data written to that date from a prior report, and continue to be overwritten in subsequent reports if the value changes.
At the time of this writing, The June 2023 release for May 2023 data is the most recent
- Forwards
- The “Forward” symbols are populated by a single cell from the report, using the date listed in the report for the “Modeling and analysis completion”. For example, the report released on June 6th, 2023 had a “Modeling and analysis completion” date of 6/5/23. These symbols all have a month code and 2-digit year appended to them. So, for example, in row 8 of the screen shot above, the May 2023 value of 12.42 would be sent to the STEO_COPRPUSK23 symbol with a date of 6/5/23 (since this is from the June 2023 report). These symbols give the user the ability to see how the forecast for each month has changed over the release of each report. See the example below:
Providing both symbol types allow ProphetX users to easily see the entire forecast, as well as see how the forecast for each month has changed over time. For further information on this new dataset, please visit this page in our Content Library
