Actual vs. Estimated Basis
- As noted in the Relevant Fields > INPUT TYPE and Volume sections above, DTN will collect cash data in multiple formats based on how the agribusiness shares/submits the bid to us.
- Basis Quote (1)
- A basis value and underlying futures month is shared with DTN and logged into the system. This is then combined to estimate the Cash Price.
- Cash Price Quote (2)
- A flat, cash price was shared/submitted to DTN and logged into the system. DTN will then assume a chronologically reasonable futures month to estimate the Basis Quote for that Cash Price.
- For example, Cash Price quote from ElevatorID 3451 for SPOT Yellow Corn is collected on April 1st, 2023. The close of @CK23 will be used to estimate the Basis Quote for that location.
- Rolling of assumed underlying future contract
- For SPOT BASIS symbols that are estimated and Indices, the underlying futures month will roll on the 1st of the contract month
- Example: Cash Price quote from ElevatorID 3451 for SPOT Yellow Corn is collected on May 1st, 2023. The close of @CN23 will be used to estimate the Basis Quote for that location.
- This process is also used to normalize and compile our National and Regional Indices (more detail below)
